Electro-Motive Diesel locomotives

Challenge

Electro-Motive Diesel, also known as EMD, is a leading US-based manufacturer of diesel electric locomotives, and a part of the Caterpillar group. The company’s headquarters is based in McCook, Illinois with additional facilities in Indiana and Mexico.

The company manufactures a range of freight and passenger locomotives internationally, including those capable of hauling major freight trains. The latest locomotives include complex electrical systems to manage power output, reducing fuel burn, and to deploy regenerative braking.

Electro-Motive was using a competitor system for checking the major control cabinets installed in locomotives, but were searching for a truly multibus system that could handle faster, more efficient testing procedures. A demonstration of the MK Test system resulted in Electro-Motive purchasing eight systems.

System Specification

Test system is a Distributed System.
Multibus Function Test Capability
2 & 4 Wire continuity resistance
1500VDC Insulation/Dielectric Test
1000VAC Hi-Pot Test
Full Function Test Mbus. The system is able to distribute actuation signals from every test point to the active components in the cabinet, replicating train running conditions.
